About Westlake Marching Thunder

Founded in 2009, the Westlake Band program is comprised of a marching band, three concert bands, two jazz bands, two percussion ensembles and a winter guard.  Under the direction of Brek C. Mangelson, the Westlake Band is committed to excellence in music education and serving the Saratoga Springs/Eagle Mountain community.
Over the past 5 years, the Westlake Marching Thunder has seen tremendous growth. The band started in the 1A Division in 2009, and moved up a class every year until the band entered class 4A in 2012. In 2013, the band remained in 4A, and will compete in 5A (the largest classification in the state) in 2014.
Westlake has received numerous Outstanding Music, Outstanding Percussion, Outstanding Color Guard and Outstanding Visual awards throughout its short history. The band has placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at every competition they’ve competed in except one.  Westlake was the Utah 4A State Champion in 2012, a feat they repeated in 2013.  The band has competed every year at the Bands of America St. George Regional, making the prestigious Finals competition twice (placing 4th in 2013). The band was also the Grand Champion of the Mountain West Invitational held at Idaho State University in 2013.
